Handmade for the Hungry/Empty Bowl
The Glynn Visual Arts Center fosters community in several ways, but one particularly popular way is the Handmade for The Hungry Class. It teaches the basics of making hand-built bowls and then at the end of class the bowls are donated to the Empty Bowl fundraising event GVA does with America's Second Harvest.
At this event, participants purchase one of the homemade bowls to keep and a full, delicious soup dinner. Imagine eating hot soup out of a handcrafted bowl and seeing the artistry continue with every bowl around the table; a blue one, a brown one, one with embedded patterns, one with a handle. All the proceeds go to America's Second Harvest. In 2017 the Empty Bowl Event raised 9,000 meals worth of funds for the hungry in Glynn County.
In addition to fundraising, GVA offers classes for all ages, from small children to the retired. Classes include:
Painting, Pottery, Drawing, Glass Arts, Fiber Arts, Jewelry Making, Print Making, Photography, Paper-mixed Media.
Students of the other art classes also often have the opportunity to have their work showcased through various events, including ones like Handmade for the Hungry/Empty Bowl. Glynn Visual Arts Center also provides custom events and workshops, for more information, visit the Workshops page
